3 Tips to Meaningfully Connect With Your Child
There’s a lot of pressure to be the perfect parent. It can be hard to know what you’re doing wrong when your child is constantly expressing big emotions, or displaying aggressive behavior, and you’re frustrated because you don’t feel like you’re able to connect with your child.
I’m Christine Gierer, a child therapist at Silver River Counseling, and in this blog post I’ll give you some tips on how to meaningfully connect with your kids and become more intentional about your relationship with them.
First, Get down to their level when talking with them.
You want your child to know that you’re interested in what they have to say and willing to listen to them, so this will help a lot if you meet them halfway by getting on their level instead of towering over the top of them from an adult perspective.
The best way is to literally get down on the floor or hands and knees so you’re able to look them straight in the eyes and connect with them.
It shows that you care about what they’re saying and that you want to listen instead of just correcting them.

Second, Don’t speak in a condescending tone.
It’s hard to relate to your kids when you talk down to them like they’re small children. Try your best not to speak in a condescending tone like using words like “little”, “tiny” or referring to their age. Also try not to snap at them when they do something wrong and give yourself some time before you respond. This will help your child feel respected instead of talked down too and which could lead to them being more open with you.
Third, Find common ground with your child.
This is a great way to connect with your child. Try talking about things you have in common like their favorite show or movie, or even a favorite game to play. This will help them know that you’re interested in who they are as a person and will give you guys built in conversation topics.
When it comes to your relationship with your child, the most important thing is that you are intentional about how you connect with them. Whether you’re just beginning your parenting journey or have been a parent for many years, take some time to think through these ideas and find ways to better relate to your child.
